Spring Cooling Checklist
A few simple steps each spring keep your AC running efficiently and help you catch problems before the first heat wave.
Indoors
- Replace or clean your air filter
- Set the thermostat to cooling and lower it a few degrees to test
- Confirm cold air reaches the vents within a few minutes
- Make sure all supply and return vents are open and unblocked
- Check that no water is pooling near the indoor unit (clear condensate drain)
- Replace thermostat batteries if applicable
Outdoors
- Clear leaves, grass, and debris at least 2 feet around the outdoor unit
- Gently rinse the outdoor coil with a garden hose (power off first)
- Check that the unit sits level and the disconnect is intact
- Listen for unusual rattling, buzzing, or grinding
Before summer
- Schedule a professional cooling tune-up
- Note any rooms that don't cool evenly to mention to your technician
