Spring Cooling Checklist

A few simple steps each spring keep your AC running efficiently and help you catch problems before the first heat wave.

Indoors

  • Replace or clean your air filter
  • Set the thermostat to cooling and lower it a few degrees to test
  • Confirm cold air reaches the vents within a few minutes
  • Make sure all supply and return vents are open and unblocked
  • Check that no water is pooling near the indoor unit (clear condensate drain)
  • Replace thermostat batteries if applicable

Outdoors

  • Clear leaves, grass, and debris at least 2 feet around the outdoor unit
  • Gently rinse the outdoor coil with a garden hose (power off first)
  • Check that the unit sits level and the disconnect is intact
  • Listen for unusual rattling, buzzing, or grinding

Before summer

  • Schedule a professional cooling tune-up
  • Note any rooms that don't cool evenly to mention to your technician
